Oh man the spurs seem to startle everyone. :P The fascinating thing is that scientists believe they are a remnant of a leg structure. If you look at the skeletal structure of pythons, they actually have a hip bone, something a legless animal seems to have little use for. The spurs do not connect to the hip bone, but they believe that they were once similar to the spurs on the foot of other animals (like roosters) and have remained somewhat "free floating". They are now thought to be used during mating to help hold onto the female. The fact that pythons retain this ancient hip/leg remnant is one reason scientists list them as a more primitive species than the modern snakes that lack this structure. I think it just makes them even more special. :)
