When I bought my most recent one (still not quite sure what he is), the lady said he had been returned twice due to aggressive behavior. She almost refused to box him up for me. I've had him for a month now and he's absolutely tame.

I bought my Hog Island from a local pet store and the guy I spoke to initially was pretty knowledgeable and talked the talk. When I finally decided to go rescue the little one, the main guy wasn't working so I had to deal with another staff member who wasn't quite as comfortable handling snakes. He had trouble finding her, hidden under some fake viny stuff and when he saw her coiled up he said "Uh-oh, don't like the looks of that" (totally mystified me as I had been in and held this boa - she was pretty laid back). He then proceeded to get out a pair of these big, thick, rubber gloves (like the kind used in hot water or high temp applications - somewhat amusing but still a bit of overkill) to hand her over to me. But they do have some nice snakes in this store and I'm pretty sure that this is due to the guy that knows (and likes) his stuff.

I rescued my chameleon from the local petsmart. They didn't get any money from me. They actually paid me to take her (after a few complaints to corporate.)

when is a good time to "complain"? and to who? corporate? i wonder if these shops work on some kind of schedule for when they have to move their animals/inventory by. i can be good at complaining and won't mind taking in some little critters who need some TLC. :)

I wrote a few letters to corporate about the deplorable conditions they were under, and how they should get a reptile handler in there that knows what they're doing. How her humidity was far lower than it should have been. Mind you I did pay some money up front, but I got a refund and then some.

Last time I went in there I was proud to see that they were taking better care. They had a Russian tortoise who had a cut on the back of its neck. I reported it to the manager, and she immediately put him in a critter keeper and rushed him to the vet. I went back in there to check on him and he had antibiotics both on his food and on his neck!!
