The dimensions for a 40 gallon breeder are generally 36x18x17, IMO that is too small for even a Bearded Dragon, I can't think of a single tortise that could spend its whole life in that size tank. With something that size you are really limited to what you can put in there, especially if you are eliminating snakes from said list. The OP has basically narrowed his results down to some type of Gecko, but has stated he doesn't want a Leo sooo, not sure what else to throw out there.

Reptiles in general TOLERATE handling, we tend to say they enjoy it, but for the most part handling is more for the owners enjoyment that the animals.

Dont get a tegu or monitor just because you have something to put a baby in for a week or so. They take lots of preparation and planning before deciding to get one. Tortoises generally do too well in aquariums.

Steppe runners are neat little buggers. (They're like a mini savannah monitor in some ways.)
You could seal your aquarium and possibly get a more arborial gecko.
Maybe some species of small skinks?

What about trying a pac man frog? They are more soil dwelling than aquatic and since your 40gal. breeder isn't water tight? I don't know how interactive they are but they certainly can be entertaining at feeding time! They come in an array of different colors. Never really owned one but considering purchasing. Still doing research on them. Just a thought. :salute:

Thanks for all the great suggestions, I would like for the reptile to live in the tank permanently (not eventually need a bigger tank...),

So all turtles would get too big for the tank?

Ill have to look at the pac man frog, sounds interesting.
    Also what about crested geckos?

I'm far from a crested gecko expert, but I believe you generally want a tall tank for them as they like to climb the glass quite a bit.

I think frogs are a great place to start. Some species can be kept in colonies, which would go well with a tank that size, I think.

Yeah, I am definitely going for frogs!

The pac man frog seems to be a bit to inactive....

I'm currently looking at Oriental Fire Bellied Toads (Bombina orientalis), or poison dart frogs....

Someday, I want a colony of dart frogs. They are so beautiful. :) I don't know much about frogs - feel free to post info and/or pictures on what you're considering!
