I have tons of those black hides from Reptile Basics. My snakes seem to love them.

If you're gonna get a VE, get the VE-200. Proportional control and it has a safety shutoff. It's worth the extra money. I have a few VE's and they work great.

Next time you stop by the dollar store, look for plastic cereal bowls. That's what I use for hides because they are not semi-translucent. I use a soldering iron to make the hole but you may be able to cut through with a knife
