    anyone else have this problem???
well, today i am going to return the bulb, and get a nice red lamp with a timer. I will also make a quick stop at Wallmart, and pick up a heat pad and that digital thermomoter. I was looking on walmarts site (www.walmart.com) and i could not find those items, if walmart does not have a heat pad, will a retile heatpad work? thanks

you can use reptile headpads, but the temperatures are just not as reliable and they're a lot more expensive. The reptile heat pad on my ball python's cage wasn't enough, so I ended up using that and a small heat lamp on his warm side. Plus it's a lot easier to move a human head pad than a reptile one.

well, after searching around the house, i found the heatpad i knew we had. The temperature goes from 25-50-75. What should I put it on as?

    Thanks

    Huh?

Ultratherm heat pads are some of the best reptile heat mats on the market (you can find them at www.beanfarm.com under heating elements) - WAY more reliable than a human heat pad, and for the efficiency & safety, very cost-effective.

Human heating pads ARE NOT DESIGNED TO BE LEFT ON ALL THE TIME & this eventually will shorten the lifespan of this heating element, as well as pose a potential fire/overheating hazard due to intentional misuse of the product.

I know a lot of folks here use them with varied degrees of success, but IMHO, it just seems like an accident waiting to happen. Maybe I've just heard to many horror stories. Personally, I'd rather spend $30 on the extra peace of mind.

    Just my $.02

I should have clarified. Human heat pads (from what I've heard from other people) tend to give a more consistent heat gradient. I've heard stories about reptile heating pads cracking tanks, or having uneven hot spots...that sort of thing. I have no personal experience with that at all, the reptile pad I've got seems to have fairly consistent heating.

From what I understand, people are talking about the reptile heat pads commonly sold at pet stores. The ones K is talking about are probably some of the best on the market, and could be far better than the ones most of us see in retail.

As for the pad being easier to move, the reptile heat pads are designed to be stuck to the tank, and it is rather hard to get them off, and it can be a pain when cleaning. I don't have a problem with the reptile heating pad I'm using, it just wasn't warm enough on it's own for Issa's tank.

As for Butters, she lives in a rubbermaid, so she is on a human heat pad (which I had already had).

As for reptile HEADpads..well those don't exist at all :P

And I've never used the flexwatt stuff either, which is another option, if you know how to set it up correctly.

hmmmm, i got a digital probe thermometar, will this work accuratly? It works for the warm side of the tank, but for the colder side, it doesnt give me a reading, all it says is "Lo"

    jaw got stuck :(
Now I am getting very worried. I have a heat pad under the tank, and the same light. With an actaul digital thermomater, the temp is only reading 69.4 ON THE WARM SIDE. That seems strange, because when I touch the subterfuge, it feels warm. Defective thermostat? What should i do?
