I don't think baby boas stress out in big cages. My sunglow was a month old when I got him and he went right into a 36"x 18" enclosure. Now he's 10 months old and in a 4'x2'x2'. He has NEVER refused a meal, sheds perfect and uses every inch of his enclosure. I can't imagine him in a 20 gallon. I mean he hasn't out grown it but there is no harm using a 40 gallon for a baby.

If that works for you then great. But I've been in the boa business for a long time and have always heard snake experts and top breeders say that appropriately sized enclosures are necessary. Sure there might be exceptions who can go right into an adult sized tank but that's definitely not the norm or standard practice. I just don't see the point in dropping $500+ on a pvc cage, heating element and thermostat when it likely will stress the hatchling out.

As hatchlings I like them in smaller enclosures to be able to better monitor for disease and any issues that might go unnoticed in a large enclosure. I've also seen babies slip between glass paneling in a 4x2x1 enclosure.

My 6' BCI girl went into a 48x24x14 when she was almost 2' long and she was fine. I gave her a couple hides and she was happy. Now she is 6' and in the same cage, although I'm going to need upgrade in a year or so.
