I've literally just got my digital thermometer and hygrometer in the post so I'll set that up now.
I'll move my cold side hide into the corner when I get him out of it (still there). He does bask in the hot side, I've seen him go there a few times along with my whole tank being messed up in the morning lol.
I'll also definitely give the humidity producer thing a try, I've read it before on another forum.
Also, the thermostat is a dimming one so I'm not sure if that would work with the heat mat?
The thermostat/dimmer will work just fine. Let us know how it turns out!

Yeah if it doesnt have an actual temperature that you can set it to, just periodically check the temps. If you want something that you don't have to check the temps for, get one of the Hydrofarm Digital Thermostat (they're like $36 on amazon).

Update: I just got him out then for the first time and he was great but I noticed he's definitely going into shed. I think that would explain some of the hiding? I put him back in his tank just then and he went straight into the hide on the hot side (I did put him more near the hot side oops but he went there on his own).
up your humidity to about 70%. it'll help him shed easier.

One of each kind on the cold and warm sides and then see which ones your snakes likes. Then either take out the others or leave them in too. My little girl hopes from hide to hide daily. I got 4 in there. Two of the small blue bowls flipped over, one clear round Tupperware one flipped over and an extra large Exo Terra cave which was my old red tail boas hide until she outgrew it. My BP will sit in the extra big hide sometimes with her head poking out or sometimes in the bowls all curled up sleeping. Same hides is good advice but maybe my snakes is weird but she doesn't seem to really care as long as they offer her shelter.
And yes they hide when shedding. I didn't see my little girl for about a week when she was shedding. She just sat in her humid hide the whole time. Then after shedding, I saw her out and about patrolling for food and inside her humid hide was a perfect one piece shed. I usually keep my humidity around 50% normally and then replace 2 of her normal hides with humid hides when I see her going blue and then throw in a burlap craft bag filled with damp moss on top of her humid hide which raises her cage up to 73% humidity. Then once she sheds I pull em all out and put her normal hides back in and the humidity goes back down to around 53%.
your humid setup for when your snake is shedding sounds really interesting, can you post pictures of it? I had my Albino have a less than perfect shed even though the humidity was high and I may want to use some of your methods.
Re: Question about my new BP
I'll also add that all snakes have different personalities. I have all my tubs set up the same way, same temps, humidity, etc. I have one snake that is always on the cool side except for one day after eating. I have another snake who's always on the warm side. I have another snake who refuses to use any hides, but sits behind them. So as long as he's eating and pooping fine, I wouldn't really worry. Of course provide proper temps and hides, but he's gonna do whatever he wants to do no matter what you want him to do lol
