A pencil is a better alternative when they don't strike and coil correctly. Put it in the rats mouth so it can bite the wood and not your snake.

It's something that happens, just last night I had one squeeze all the rat's internal organs out of its side... it smells bad for a little while but that's it.

Gross. Lol. I feed in tank (obviously) did you, too? Or did you use a feeder box?

No I feed everyone in their tubs (and my bigger snakes in their viv's), I don't subscribe to the thought of feeding in a separate enclosure.

How did you clean the mess? Just wipe it down?

when I checked on snakes today I scrubbed that one's water bowl off with a pad before filling it yeah, I wouldn't use a mix of vinegar and water like you suggested just because any lingering smell of vinegar would probably stress the snake and may even make it stop eating til the smell is gone

I don't want it to smell of rat blood. I'm due to change his substrate in the next week, maybe after I clean the spot, the new substrate will help cover the smell.

Really it sounds like you're over thinking it, wipe any blood away with water and a paper towel and you're fine.
