Thanks. I will definitely need a heat pad living in Alberta, also the snake will be in my basement. Can you use UTH with pvc enclosures?

Yup! Many PVC enclosures even have the UTH and thermostat probe location pre-formed so all you have to do is tape them in. Again, a UTH regulated by a thermostat is never going to get above 100 deg, so there's no way it can melt or burn anything.

Thank you for being so helpful! I am looking into plastic tanks, but if not I will probably get a exo terra tank. If anyone can reccomend a Canadian option for pvc enclosures, that would be great!

No problem! You deserve to be commended for doing your homework and learning all this before giving a snake a happy new home.

Found a 40 gal pvc enclosure for sale on kijiji, hopefully it's still available. Is 40 gallons too big? I can always put a divider or something in if I get a young python.

If you are gonna be using a PVC or HDPE or any of those with 1/2 inch plus material, you will probably want flexwatt or THG heat tape as a regular UTH like Zoo Med or something wont be strong enough to heat through that thick of material. Of course you will need a thermostat or rheostat to regulate its temp.

As for Canadian cage makers, no idea there but you can try places like Animal Plastics, Boaphiles, Northwest Constrictors(Proline), Showcase Cages. Maybe one of those ships to Canada. Actually there is one I know of in Abbotsford called Exotik Habitats.

Okay, pvc's sound like a bit of work to keep warm... Remember, my python would be in a cold Alberta basement, getting to 12 degrees Celsius at night sometimes. Usually it will stay at least 16 at night though. What do you guys think would be the absolute best way to keep my python warm?

Are substrate heaters the same as UTH?

If you have an under tank heat pad and an over head light, as long as the temp in the room doesn't get that low, the tank will stay hot. If you have a mesh screen lid then cover it with foil or even plexiglass, just make sure you leave a hole for the light

Alright. Whichever I decide to do, that sounds good. Aren't the overhead lamps dehydrating?
