Also you can just go to Home Depot or any hardware store and buy a lamp dimmer(rheostat) and use that combined with a temp gun and thermometer with a probe. That's what im using atm until I get my Herpstat. The hydrofarm one I was told makes a loud clicking sound everytime it comes on or goes off and its not a proportional like Herpstat. FYI though, Herpstats are the best. I got one on my red tail boa and I love it, just wish I had gotten a Herpstat 2 or 4 since now I need another for this baby. I use paper towel as substrate since my BP is just a baby but i'll probably switch her over to aspen like my red tail boa to make cleaning days easier once I get her into her Proline cage. But if I were you and on a budget, get a lamp dimmer and assuming you already have a temp gun, which all reptile people should have :) , and of course the thermometer with probe like the Acurite ones, you should be good until you get the cash for something better.

Another thing. Heating lamps are not necessary, might be too hot. Also a thermostat is an absolute must have. I got my jumpstart thermostat on amazon for 30 bucks and works fine.
