i've heard others say that vodka also works, but imo that should be reserved for the keeper's use after the incident.

I've had one or two of mine bite themselves, but they always turn loose in a hurry.
I believe I'd have been just as freaked out as you were, and I've had snakes for years. My advise would be to keep a dollar store spray bottle near his tub so if he does it again you can hopefully spray his face and make him turn loose.
I don't blame you one bit for panicking a little though, I would have done the same thing.
