    Thermastat is a must with any heating device period.
    Heat mat should cover 1/3 of the tank.
    I wouldn't use artificial turf it's a pain and can hold bacteria,
    use aspen. easy to spot clean, looks good and you can mist for humidity.

    Ditch the light and get a uth. Yes you defiantly need a thermostat or rheostat to control the uth temp. It would get too hot without it. If it covers about a quarter of the tank that's good.
