Im not trying to be rude or even an ass about the question in hand, just curious as to the question. I raise rats for my snakes feed and have some that are solid grey, some half grey half white, some solid black, some half black half white, and some solid white. Ive even got one snake for some reason I can not get her to eat a black rat, but as soon as I throw a solid white one in there she attacks it. So is there a reason to breed or have only one type of rat?

Some of us keep rats as pets too, and enjoy them as more than just feed. Some of us sell some as pets, and the buyers want to know. Some of us just like knowing for the sake of our own curiosity or just learning more.

Yep. I can't breed my snakes yet but I'm having a lot of fun breeding the rats. I just purchased a burmese female and I can't wait to play with that gene. I want to, like Nikki, breed for better dumbo ears (less pointy and more round and even) and have a wide variety of colors to breed for. I'm really fond of agouti and fawn. With fawns I want to breed for as orange of a rat as I can get and I'm excited to see how that works out after multiple generations.

My favorite female just had her first litter (yay looks like 15). I can't wait to see what colors I get. Plus she has an amazing friendly, doglike personality that I really hope her babies have. She's the only rat I have out to roam around. She licks my hand all over just like a dog when I get home too. :P

I'd love to have my rat line get up to the point where I can enter and place in rat shows if desired.

And I figure if I have to breed feeders for my snakes, it's best I have a lot of fun doing it. Cleaning tubs, adding food, and filling water bottles doesn't feel like a chore when you enjoy the animals.

I'm just starting breeding rats (4 litters under my belt) and I LOVE the colors that pop up from my litters. I have NO blues and half my first litter was blues and my second litter had a PEW that came out of nowhere. It's like a box of chocolates...you never know what you'll get as far as colors in a litter. I personally like to know what colors/hets I DO have so I can make more cool colors later. My rats are already being sold as pets as well so that's helpful. When someone asks what color they are, I can try to tell them. i just need to know what mine are first.
