Pine Shavings

After doing some research, the only stores near me that have pine shavings at a reasonable price are Agway affiliates. The cheapest one is almost 40 miles from me.

The fine pine shavings from TSC are not that good. I was looking for an alternative. The bags I found are 3.25 cu. ft. and cost a little more than TSC - $5.75 each. The TSC bag is 2.5 cu. ft. so it actually works out better - $5.49 each.

FYI - pine pellets are great for keeping the smell down but they produce a ton of dust. Use VERY little at the bottom and cover with something else. It seems like over kill but it works.

I'm going to try the medium or large shavings and see if that size works out ok or better than the fine.

I didn't like the results I got from using stove pellets. I didn't like the results my room mate got when using horse pine pellets. I don't recommend them, but some people use them all the time.

The store I had been getting Mazuri & bedding (I use a combo of pine pellets & pine shavings) from has been having trouble keeping any of the bedding in stock. So I had to look around, and ended up decided to try ordering Native Earth online and picking up bedding at Tractor Supply. Because of your post and the issue at the other store I'd been using, I called & asked to be sure they had it in stock before I drove out there. They did, but they did say they had recently been having trouble getting enough in, but the issue seems to be resolved now. You might try your local store again and see if it has improved there as well.


OP, I think it really comes down to doing some experimenting to see what works for you. I was very happy using a local mom & pop type of store until they started having the issues with their supply of bedding products, and getting good prices there even though that kind of place usually doesn't have the best prices. Also, some people love the pellets and others think the shavings are good enough for controlling odors and can't stand the dust that comes from the pellets. I use the pellets for most of the rats, and use shavings for moms with babies that don't have their eyes open yet because the dust from the pellets was getting caught in the mouths & noses of pinkies.
