Is she big enough?

Here is a reality of Ball Pythons... In the wild they most likely breed every single year of their lives... That is not to say that they will produce every year... A female will only produce if she is ready to. It takes months of building follicles before ovulation to happen and fertilization can only happen if the female ovulates. Her body can reabsorb at any time up to ovulation. I personally have only had 2 females ever get egg bound. One was a proven breeder that was around 2000 grams and the other was a first time breeder and was just shy of 3000 grams but have had clutch after clutch from first time breeders at around 1200 grams.

I would. I found that if a female was prone to fasting putting a male in with her stimulates her to feed more often.

I would say go for it while she is on the small size breeding is more then just about size it is about age as well.

While I prefer the breed bigger females (the bigger the better) I have bred 1100 grams females in the past as well, some females are smaller and or poor feeders and breeding them granted they are mature enough may help trigger a better feeding response in the future.

Totally off topic, but I had to ask ... is that a cassette tape? I haven't seen one of those in over ten years!

You can always try as long as she stays in good condition. I have an '09 female that I've been trying to breed for 3 years now, but I've yet to get any eggs. She's just barely 1,000 grams on a good day. She's definitely not in bad condition, her body just doesn't want to have eggs yet I guess (even though she has glowed the last two breeding seasons :taz: )

Choosing a breeding candidate depends on a combination of things: Size, Age,-Maturity and Body Condition.


Most people just blindly breed their females at 1500g.
But it's not just a set weight. You have to look at the snake's overall body condition and maturity too. A mature short chunky female at 1200 grams is a better breeding candidate than a long skinny 1800 gram girl, for example.
That 1200 gram girl has a better shot at enduring the breeding season with the better body condition and fat reserves than the skinny 1800 gram one. And some girls just never get large or exceed 1200g even though they can be a few years old.

I would run her this season and see what happens.
I have one girl that was the same and she dropped 4 slugs last year, now she is feeding like crazy and gaining weight.
