    You are going to have some heat loss regardless of how you mount the probe.
    Mine are directly foil taped to the flex a watt and then I adjust the thermostat accordingly.

    Thank you, everyone. I took the above advice and the problem was solved within hours. I was really confused b/c on my original rack, the difference btw the t-stat reading (with the probe taped to the Flexwatt) and the tub/substrate surface temp was only a couple of degrees. When I was suddenly getting a 15 degree difference on the second rack, I couldn't figure it out.

    Of course, the solution was simple and should have been obvious - I knew you all would steer me right!
