i agree, and i know that there is really no solution, but i just wish it didn't have to be that way for the sake of the animal. i could never work in a petstore though, for that very reason.

I worked in a pet store, it is not the employees place to judge who knows what about what animal, if it was, they would never get sold.
Exactly why I scratched my pet shop idea. I dont think I could handle selling animals to people I can tell dont know what they are doing.

I would just settle for pet stores educating their customers and giving them a good care sheet rather then a test. There is not one pet shop near me that gives out care sheets with their pets. (I am working on that)

I agree with what was said later in this post. Having a cat was easy compared to a herp. However my fiance is alergic to animal hair/dander, and not alergic to reptile skin...yaa. I have always liked reptiles, I had an inguana for 2 years, and I have always liked pythons and boas, so i went with the python. I did not know much about a snake, aside from the fact that you don't grab them head on, and you gotta keep him warm. But, hides, humidity, temps, and cleaning was all new to me. This site was great for me learning that, as I only learned roughly about hides, humidity, and temps from the pet store (very knowledgeable pet store employee, just very limited time spent there). Even the light issue was different for me. Could you imagine if I got the same UV light I had for my iguana and used it for the BP...hehe. Luckily the pet store guy let me know that I didn't need to go that route.

Jeanne hit the nail on the head in my opinion. As far as the pet store is concerned ( 9.9 times outa 10 ) its all about the sale.

Especially when you're dealing w/corporate chain stores.

The PetCo's and PetSmart's in the bay area all provide caresheets, but I have no idea if they give them to customers when they purchase an animal as I've never purchased an animal from either.

i got a care sheet with a hamster i got at petsmart and also a gecko that i got there one time. the petsmart we have is decent but i don't get the feeling that the employees are terribly educated, just that they know enough to throw in some crickets and spray some water or whatever the case may be with the animal in question.
