Rueben, no, it doesn't have to be see-through and the ball will probably appreciate it if it's not, but it's easier for us as keepers to see where the snake is and check the thermometer-hygrometer if it is see-through.

We had him a year on July 6th, and he was about 2 months old when we got him.....about 14 or 15 months old.

The one we had for Ozzie, you could see in. They are bot in aquariums now, but we feed in the rubbermaids. We had the aquariums, and didn't want them to go to waste.
