I voted corn snake, but I think it depends. As a first snake and a snake for a child, a corn snake has been perfect for us. All of my kids have a corn snake, and they are a great fit. I also enjoy them and the beautiful morphs we have. However, I have 2 Cal kings, and they are mine. I enjoy their attitudes when taking them out (just tail rattlings and mock striking so far) but they are very chill once in my hands. I could do without the musking ... but they are still young.

When I got my first snake I was SET on a milk snake. I read a bit more into their temperments and whatnot, but what really got me was just their size. I'd rather have a larger snake than a smaller one... no real reason why :P just easier to hold on to I guess.
Corns have SO many morphs and colours (as do milk snakes), but king snakes I don't find as asthetically pleasing in the end. Also, for where I am, corns were more available from breeders I found.
There is a fantastic forum if you'd like to learn a bit more about corns and the community!

Good luck with whatever decision you make! Either way it'll be great :) and you'll have to post photos

If you're interested in milk snakes but like a bit of size there are still some options. Here's a link for your viewing pleasure with a few such animals:
