I was raised in Texas where we did ranching so we came across snakes all the time. I was taught at a young age that venomous found around the house were to be killed by cutting off their head. Non venomous were to be left alone due to their abilities to control mice and such. So that is what I had always done until I found out the proper way to "kill" a snake. I still have mixed emotions about relocating a hot snake. The cost of treatment if something went wrong in relocating the snake overrides my emotions so I probably would have done the same thing as the guy in video minus the decapitation and laughing about it. The reptile community is not as large as some people seem to think so the only good snake is a dead snake mentality is norm . Which in all honesty might be the best thing because if every joe blow decided they could relocate hots we will have a lot of inexperienced handlers getting bitten. Just my two cents and I do not condone the actions of the guy in the video due to his enjoyment of the kill.

    So, I'll revisit two things.

    1) Relocation should be done by someone who knows how to handles HOTs. Not Jo Blow citizen. I've seen plenty of videos of people who thought they knew what they were doing getting bit. Also, unless you are in a rural area already, where are you gonna relocate it to if you had the expertise? I live right next to a city park with a lake. Never seen a snake but if I saw a venomous one I would not just leave it be. Hundreds of people go through that park every day. I would feel real bad if I let it go and heard it bit someone later. Animal removal specialists aren't available everywhere. And most aren't free. So that's not always an option. And calling 911 will just get a cop out there who will probably just shoot the thing.

    2) The whole laughter thing. This is where tolerance is needed. And really it would be hypocritical, at least for me, to make fun of the guy. Because I hate bugs being in my house (ants, roaches, flies, etc). I will kill them on site. I don't give a flying crap about what pain or suffering they might feel. And I'd probably think it amusing if a nearly dead roach started eating itself. And I tell ya, if I see a whole bunch of bugs in one spot, especially roaches, I will go batcrap crazy and start going on a mad killing spree usually accompanied by maniacal laughter. I am sure there is a bug lover community out there that has pet roaches and stuff that would have a similar reaction as some of you if they saw that.

    That's my opinion on it.

Roaches and stuff are considered pests, not generally considered pets. Any person with common sense can relocate a hot, It's simple. A broom handle and a 5 gallon bucket with a top. The first snake I ever relocated was a cottonmouth and it was by that exact method. I was 10 years old and hadn't had a pet snake ever in my life. I can get the fact that people aren't taught the proper way to humanely kill a snake, but the laughter is what tickled a nerve for me. That and the idiotic commentary that was unnecessary and to add to the fact that he recorded this. That was inhumane in my book. I don't like the way he was cruel to the snake, regardless of the species.

Even if you did I doubt you'd video it and post it on the internet. The guy in the video is almost as big an idiot as the folks who let their puppy get too close to their burmese python, took a video of the inevitable results, and put it on FB.

I know people who keep roaches as pets.

I also know that plenty of people, including family, who count snakes as pests.

It sounded to me like the guy's laughter was more like, "Holy crap! I can't believe I'm seeing this!" than, "HA HA HA! Got ya, Sucka!" He specified that he only killed it to protect his child and his dog and if you watched the entire video, he also said, "Sorry snake," and wasn't laughing when he said it. Is it so far fetched to even entertain the thought that this guy isn't a complete jerk and he just freaked in the moment? Is it completely impossible that he doesn't fancy himself a serpent slayer and wasn't super stoked that he got to cut a snake's head off, that's just what he felt he had to do at the time?

If we believe his commentary, that he killed the snake to protect his child, then he didn't do anything wrong in my opinion. I'd kill anything to protect my child and I wouldn't apologize for it. Let's not be so judgmental. Maybe the guy made a poor choice in posting the video, big deal. I've certainly said and done things that were in poor taste, that doesn't make me a giant piece of crap of a person.

I would hit him with a "superman" punch :D and relocate his jaw. That's just because I don't like the way he was cruel to the snake, regardless of the species.

I meant to address this too, but I forgot.

    A) I'm sure there are kids who read this forum who are 10-13 years old. I don't think it's very responsible to advise them that it's perfectly ok for them to play with venomous snakes as long as they have a broom and a bucket.

    B) Chicks don't really dig guys who run around threatening to break jaws. That's just an old movie theme they used to use to make it entertaining before they could swear and show boobs.

    Mr Oni
    Its uncalled for

There is no reason to kill an animal
copperhead won't kill you and its not hard to make a phone call for its safe removal.
The ironic part is that some of the "snake people" on this forum have no problem with it.

I bet you dudes have had plenty to say to defend 'certain' snakes....oh but not them 'Other' snakes they be ver'y scury and mah lohdi mah little puppeh and chill'den be in sooo much dangah.

I teach my kids that unless its a mosquito or a fly....you dont kill it. There is no darn reason for it.

Lets not forget how hard it is to pick up a phone for a safe removal.
