Since I built an open rack I decided to paint 3 sides of all my tubs so they stay nice and dark. I leave the front open for a quick peek in. Home depot had this 2x spray paint that seems to work well. I scuffed up the sides and masked it then gave them a quick spray. You can try this on one and if the behavior changes then you know thats the answer.
