Call your local humane society on this guy, he is mistreating his fish!

If you really want to use carpet you can always get reptile carpet. You might also check some online stores. I buy practically all my pet supplies online because it's soooo much cheaper. If you decide to go with a loose substrate I recommend Bed-a-Beast. It will really help with humidity, looks natural and you can feed on it.

A good place to find your carpet is a home improvement store, like Home Depot or Lowe's.

I'd love to buy my stuff online, but I don't have a credit card. :( Wish I did....soooo bad. Everything is cheap online.
As for Home Depot...Canada's equivalent would be Home Hardware(although we do have a Home Depot, but the nearest one is an hour+ drive to Windsor). I was gonna go there today, but my Mom didn't think they'd have outdoor carpeting there. I think I'm just gonna go with repti-bark or bed-a-beast for substrate. But I don't have to get any of that right away. I'm gonna start out on just newspaper to keep an eye on mites and such.

Excellent plan, Cody. Still, if you like the carpet idea for after the newspaper period, maybe you can catch a ride with someone else to Home Hardware to check. Here, you can get outdoor carpet for about $6 worth for enough to make 4 or more pieces of carpet, depending on enclosure size, versus $15 or so for two pieces for a small enclosure from a pet store.

That's a great plan. I start all my snakes on paper towels in quarantine setup in a seperate room for the same reason before switching to their permanent cage and substrate.
