My new Boa!

Oh ok. I'm still learning all this boa stuff, considering its much different than ball morphology.

When someone says "I have a EBV Red Group Pastel Hypo Jungle" what does that mean exactly?

I know the EBV stands for "East Bay Vivariums" and that is where the lineage started, and red group was one particular line or trait that was selectively bred(I think?) an pastel refers to the coloring/patterning, and hypo is short for hypomelanistic meaning the dark colors are drown out, or non existent, an no clue what jungle means.

It would be great if someone could tell me if I'm right on the stuff I tried to explain and tell me what the other stuff means lol.

Jungle is a codominant gene. There is a super form: super jungle

You've got it mostly right.

EBV Red Group is simply the line of pastel. There are nearly a dozen different lines. I have a Pastel Dream and 3 Cherry line pastels and they all look a bit different. In addition to those 2 lines, there are also the Inferno, Summit, Ferrari, and Flamingo lines, just to name a few off the top of my head. Incidentally, the EBV Red Group and the Jeff Ronne's Pastel Dream are the original 2 lines of pastels.

The pastel gene is polygenic in nature. Which means that there seem to be multiple traits that work together and it is not inheritable in the same manner as dominant, co-dominant, or recessive genes are. It is not guaranteed to pass on to the offspring. In fact, if you want to create pastel babies, both parents really should carry the trait. If you use one pastel parent, the pastel can help to "clean up" the color and pattern, but you really won't make any true pastel babies with only one parent.

Hypomelanism is the reduction, but not elimination, of melanin (black pigmentation). This creates a very reddish or pinkish-orange boa. Hypo boas are generally quite recognizable from normal babies and usually have a very clean color and pattern with butterfly-shaped saddles.

Jungle is both a color and a pattern gene. These can vary quite a lot - some "low-expression jungles" can be hard to recognize, especially as babies before the color really develops. Most jungles will have a more caramel and rust coloration. The color can be a bit lost when combined with other color genes though - so a hypo jungle will look more like a hypo in color, but may have the aberrant pattern noted of jungles.

So, when you say you have an EBV Red Group Pastel Hypo Jungle, you simply have a snake that is a pastel, a hypo, and a jungle. A dual-gene polygenic animal.

Do you have paperwork for your baby? I mean absolutely no disrespect at all - you have a very nice baby there! - but I would expect to see more color on a pastel hypo and more trademarks of the jungle gene. Pastels can and do deepen in color as they grow, but there should be some color there now. But perhaps the pictures just aren't the best for me to see that. Annnnd, I tend to have really high standards, lol. The most important thing is that if the breeder is reputable, then you're good to go! Again - no disrespect intended!! :gj:

Thank you for all that clarification. I will call the breeder and get some paperwork. The guy threw out the names of who the parents were and where they came from, but I don't recall...

Awesome looking boa and all of this boa talk is not making me want to wait to get one. I want a Brazilian Rainbow or a red tail. Don't even know what morph to start with for either one of those.

Lol I love my boas and enjoy them so much more than my BP. So inquisitive. Very fun to handle and watch.
