    I've used both. in my T8's I prefer heat tape, but in taller cages like my T12's I like radiant heat panels.

    The biggest advantage of a radiant heat panel is you can have a thick substrate layer, this is something you cannot do with heat tape.

    I use paper based substrates: paper towels/butchers paper/corrugated wrap/etc. depending on what is the cheapest at the time.

    When using the flexwatt belly heat any substrate will work, but you will need to keep the layer 1/2" or less for the flexwatt to work properly.
