Things to look for in a good breeder

I agree about the reputation by the way. I should have phrased that more along the lines of 'does not have a bad reputation' rather than 'has a good one'


But if people ask me for references since I don't have a BOI I would probably refer them to a few people on this forum who can attest that a) I am a legit person in this hobby b) I am reasonable and intelligent most of the time c) I seem to care about making sure I'm doing things correctly and in the best interest of my future reputation. I guess I was thinking that kind of process would be included in 'make sure they have a good rep'.

I agree with this. There are a lot of us (myself included) that have very little if no "good rep" because when people are happy with their purchases, they don't always write about it. However, if they have a bad experience, that tends to be the first thing they do. So don't just assume that because someone has no good rep that they are necessarily bad sellers or shady. It could be that they are great sellers and people just haven't spread the word. Definitely ask for references. A good breeder should be able to give you references. And if they give you some, take a moment to send an e-mail and actually check them out.

That's what I do, and be sure to leave an exact account of the transaction on the BOI afterwards. So, someone else may give them a chance too.

^ This. It's easy for people to remember to leave negative feedback, so I always try to post on the BOI when a purchase goes well.

I'm a little opposite than most people. I tend to write up GOOD Guy threads when I have a pleasant experience and I usually avoid bad guy threads. Those on the BOI just cause too much drama. If their was a mistake made and it was resolved, I usually don't post about it.

I wouldn't pull punches in a good guy thread, if a mistake I didn't expect or want to happen occurred I'd mention it. I would also follow that with how the party corrected the mistake, speaking to their willingness to provide good customer service.

Mistakes are mistakes, it's not intentional and life happens.

The only time I see a bad BOI bad guy thread is one where the poster expects the community to believe them based on words. Ones with full record of everything that happened and a clear line of bad guy moves makes for open and shut cases.

I think I didn't communicate my message properly. Let me try this again (for my own sanity).

I WILL post a good guy thread if all went as planed and I am happy with the purchase. I have currently done this with every transaction I've been in simply because all my transactions have gone without a hitch!

If a mistake is made, I DON'T post about it. BOI can harbor too much drama and I personally don't care for drama. If I see that there was an honest mistake and it was corrected, I simply say thanks and move on. I don't bother posting it because I know it's just that...a mistake. No need to make mistakes public.

However, if I ever get a seller that wrongs me and won't correct it and clearly it isn't a mistake, then I would post it...but this has never happened to me and I hope it never does.

In my mind, you've said the same thing twice. I still disagree, mistakes are mistakes and shouldn't be covered up. Proper people will understand and know the party made the mistake and (if they did fix it) fixed it. So, it's a plus. An incident occurred, it was taken care of.

That's just m though. I'd expect nothing less of any BOI posts about me.

I guess it was me who misunderstood you. My apologies. I get it now...took this brain a couple of times to process it (I guess summer does that to me).

I guess I just like to give people the benefit of the doubt but I don't expect people to do the same (so technically I agree with you on that aspect). Maybe I'm just too nice and need to toughen up (probably a huge flaw of mine)
