    Easterns preferred food seems to be toads. More southern easterns also take frogs and lizards readily.
    This isn't just a preference though. From the research I did on the subject, trying to feed Eastern Hognose a steady diet of rodents seems to lead to liver disease and premature death.

    Otherwise, I'd have been all over keeping those cool snakes myself. The colour and pattern variation in existing wild populations would make western morphs embarrassed to slither next to these guy.

    Unless toad breeding takes off somewhere I'll just have to settle for admiring wild specimens for a few moments before release. I'd also have to double check on whether or not they are protected here and would require any special permit.

    I took a look at the text book I had from a herp class I took for my NR Law Enforcement degree, and according to that Eastern Hogs only eat frogs, toads, and Salamanders. Which would make sense, since in MN they can only be found in areas along the Mississippi River.
