    baby rats go through a molt & their pup coat is the one you really wanna go by, not their new baby fur coat.
    This is due to some coat traits like silvering or the scraggliness of a rex that dont show up til about 8 weeks. I have an elderly rex male that i hand fed, weaned & raised that looked like a normal smooth coat til he was around 8 weeks old & then it started changing & i realized he wasnt an average normal coat.
    I also have a black berk male who's silvering didnt show up til 8 weeks as well, but he was jet black up until then so i just wait til 8 weeks to identify a color. :)
