Question: Since you are using a stand for your light diffuser why do you need the media(hatchrite/perlite/vermiculite) at all? Could you simply fill the bottom with 1 1/2" of water with a couple vent holes? Or would that encourage molding?
The perlite is to keep the water from splashing around.

I also use the cross-stitch canvas....it works like a charm. It's extremely cheap too. Michael's has it for like $0.20/sheet.

Yep. Any craft/hobby store sells it. It's flexible and easily cut with scissors.

Thanks. Using the plastic cross-stitch canvas will be a lot quicker than cutting the PVC pipe to length and much cheaper than a second layer of light diffuser.
