I have used rodentpro and micedirect, gotten from expos, and breed my own. I used to live down from a reptile shop that sold cheap feeders too (some hole-in-the-wall small pet shops have good prices and I have twice been lucky enough to live by them through two major moves). I find that I need a mix of all of these to stay on top of rats.

For the sake of ease with live, my top recommendation is to find a shop with good prices, or haggle with one to give better price on promise of constant return customer. This will save effort and not cost too much more versus breeding yourself (if the price is good of course). If you don't have that, breed to save money on live.

For frozen, best to save shipping is an expo, but next to that is to buy in bulk. Mice direct, for example, has a price break if you buy so many. If you can hit that number, can make the shipping side of it more worth it.

I live about 40 minutes from Micedirect, so I lucked out there and can save money driving to get orders.... you may not be close to a larger breeder, BUT you may live close to a small scale breeder and not know it. Post on snkae forums and youmay find someone close, but I have found craigslist to get better responses. I never knew how many people breed rats and have extra to sell. One disadvantage to this is you don't always know the quality of the rats from small breeders, and I have heard of bad stories, but personally I have yet to have had a bad experience with smaller breeders.

If you can't find anyone and have no expos, you may want to do a cost analysis and see if the shipping negates savings as it may, in which case petco may be you best option... but try craigslist and see if a breeder is in your area, or if anyone in your area knows a good shop.

tired of petco and there prices
I got sick of petco too! Ha I live northern mn they are only place with feeders. They never have the right size and all the normal complaints. I decided to start breeding an I sell off surplus, I was selling them local but have been playing with idea of shipping my frozen off because sometimes I have 60 sitting in my freezer and I feel live! Haha

I plan on ordering layne labs next month, my local reptile store is just too expensive.

Amazing quality, ability to buy smaller quantity of specific sizes, shipping is on the high side though.

Just a random thought, but do people local to each other ever do 'group orders' to split the shipping costs? I used to participate in group orders (or "circles") for other sorts of things and was just wondering if it's a 'thing' for feeder orders. Might not be a terrible idea if you don't need 100+ feeders just for yourself.
