Chicks do cause snakes to have stools that are different in substance and viscosity than rodents. So do fish, insects, frogs, whatever you feed makes a different consistency of feces. That doesn't mean the snake is having problems digesting, just that different foods leave different looking waste. There is less calcium in chicks than rodents, but other than that there is no real downside. Yes, I have done it, I have compared them and I have actually had problem starters, balls in particular, start on chicks that wouldn't eat rodents.

Anyone know where to get live chicks in or around NJ? My local poultry farm sells chicks for $5 each.

Try checking with any local farm stores, co-ops or cenex. They usually carry chicks in the spring.

Okay, so chicks are on their menus!! I learn something everytime I visit this sight. I think I will stick with rodents though....I don"t think I am ready to see the cute fuzzy chick go down the hatch!

Re: Do Balls eat chicks?
Hi,
A couple of mine go nuts for F/T chicks.
I used to feed them occasionally but the only stores near me refuse to sell them in bags of less than 25 now and I don't have enough freezer space for that.

I know of several people that have fed chicks when there was some sort of natural disaster in their area/life and they couldn't get access to rodents. Their balls ate chicks without issues, but the people I have spoke with switched back to rodents as soon as they could get more. I have no idea if they can eat chicks all the time though.

My mom raises chickens, and every now and then she has chicks that need to be culled. I have a few BPs that eat them. The carpets really like them.

Re: Do Balls eat chicks?
i would see it as an opportunity thing.
you can cheaply get your hands on tons of chicken hatchlings if you have the right connections and its the right time of the year.
one idea would be to contact someone in the area that is keeping birds of prey, eagles or falcons or owls or something. These eat TONS of chicks, not once a week but every day.
theoretically a snake can also eat frogs (unless its a toxic toad) and other reptiles.
and the craziest story i heared was: a delivery of bearded dragons was intercepted at the airport in Munich by customs because they were in terrible condition, and the authorities brought them to an animal rescue. So the reptile rescue suddenly had to deal with, i forgot the number, somewhere between several hundred and a thousand bearded dragons. Half of them with missing limbs due to cannibalism and other health problems. they rescued A LOT of them, but there is no way to deal with hundreds of injured and sick beardies, on top of hundreds more that are in stable condition.
So all the smaller snakes went on a diet of baby bearded dragons for quite a while. Tragic and unusual, but the snakes did fine.

i dont know bro, but here in NYC i went to a local "vivero" the places that sell live chickens, ducks, rabbits etc etc for food, and they told me they no longer can sell small baby chicks, i dont rememeber if it was illegal for them to do so or if there was just some rule or something, but he said no. Too bad, i remember once when i was little i bought a baby duck for like 2 bucks.
I wanted to see if my BP ate chicks too cuz there is like 3 viveros within a mile from where i live, and i much rather deal with chicks than with filthy dirty rodents!
and speaking of weird stuff, once knew a guy who fed his corn snakes chunks of turkey necks!

This brings the questions.. Could u take a frozen chicken breast cut it into strips and sprinkle some of that calcium powder on it and heat it up like u would a frozen rat/chick and have ur snake eat it
