Of course you could do a combo, whatever suited you and your setup. I didn't mean pulling the plants out of the dirt, though. :) My live plants are still in their pots, so I can pull them out to find hiding crickets, rinse the leaves, etc., because that makes it easy. I have heard of people having grass as a substrate, and I think it's a nice idea, but I'd really like to be able to have moss. Why can't you buy moss spores at the garden shop? Moss would do better with less light and would be easier to find crickets in, but either one would happily use the nutrients from the p00.
