That really depends on the humidity level in the room the cage is in, and how well your cage holds in humidity. I only have to spray my cages every few weeks, but I live in a very humid place, and my cages are designed to hold in humidity/heat. With glass tanks some people have to spray down their cages a few times a day to maintain 50%-60% humidity.

I would suggest that you pick up one of these from Walmart. They cost $12 and you only need a single unit for the average cage.
This thermometer/hygrometer has a probe for the hot side of the cage, and a second temperature sensor/humidity sensor behind its screen. To use it, simply place the probe on the hot side, and the unit on the cool side.

Spraying or misting depends on your climate and your cage. You will have to find out what your cage requires to keep the humidity right. Most people will mist once or twice a day.

I use the moss in my hides and then have a automatic mister that goes off twice a day for 15 seconds a time. That is more for the live plants though but it helps. I also use cypress mulch.

I use an oversized water dish, it keeps humidity perfect.
