A RAID 0 with an external drive is pretty much a RAID 1, only more delayed and prone to failure due to operator error. RAID 10 or 6 is nice in a work environment, but kind of a waste in a home environment. Also, backups are great, but not really needed for deleted files if you're using Windows. Shadow copy is pretty standard now.

As far as cost, the difference between 1TB and 2TB drive is about $35. You're going to spend more than that with two 1TB drives and an external 2TB drive for your backup.

The person that I built this computer already had a 4TB external and is fairly computer illiterate. It needed to be as bullet proof as possible. RAID 1 only protects you from drive failure. With modern drives, drive failure really isn't a major concern. Losing a file due to carelessness is far more likely than drive failure, and for someone who isn't that good with computers restoring the file from a backup drive is a lot easier than the other options. RAID 1 just isn't worth the cost unless you are working with mission critical data and downtime isn't costs money (same with RAID 10)

I'm not saying these things to argue, I'm just trying to explain my reasons for the hardware choices in this build.

Nice build. I was about to ask why no SSD but if you had a strict budge i understand why. Those things can kill it fast.

and yea a RAID 1 isnt entirely worth it for a home user unless they are tech savy enough to manage disk replacement on their own. and if they already have plenty external storage that is just as good. I have 4 1TB disks in a RAID 10 for my data and an external back up. but i also have an SSD for my OS.

this makes me think we should get a thread going of custom PC builds. I know I have a few I put together that are post worthy. and a few more coming.
