Re: New York State Assembly Bill 2869 - Introduced January 18, 2013
The impression I got was that they are looking to increase the penalties if you have one of the restricted species without a permit. Hopefully, the language in the new version will make clearer exactly what they are trying to do. At some point it may well be worth targeting the members of the state Agriculture Committee with calls/emails regarding this when they are getting ready to review the law, but it may be premature now to act until we can see what the final version will be that they will be reviewing.

The terrible incident in CT with the chimp a couple of years back seems to be what they are zeroing in on. It is not close to being voted on formally yet, as it would have to go through multiple committees first (currently under review by Agriculture, where other forms of this bill have died over the past few years).
This is bill certainly should be monitored closely, but I am hopeful that the end result will not effect most herpers here in NY. When I hear more, I will update.

Prediction - and you heard it here first:
When the assemblywoman's office clears up the acknowledged vague wording (on their own) - a certain grandstanding group will claim this as a legislative victory.
Wait and see.

Wording or not this is BS. Its lazy crap! These guys should be working on fixing why minimum wage and education sucks.
Its a BS excuse to get attention and votes.

If some idiot wants to own a monkey then let them, eventually the monkey will off the idiot from the gene pool.
Obviously some animals shouldnt be owned like a lion or bear or primate that is 5x's as strong as a grown man...freaking duh
It makes me too mad...how the heck does someone decide to start a law like this when statistics and the internet is available.

I'm almost sure this woman has a fear of snakes, or maybe even reptiles in general. It's sad because she has probably never had a personal encounter with a captive, docile reptile. It's time for phone calls, letters, and e-mails for me :D.
