I think it also depends on whether your bp is a male or female. Females get a tad larger, and would probably be more content in a 55g long tank rather than the 30. But I have my full grown male in a 30-long, and he is fine in there. He has enough room to stretch out fully, which I think that they really need to be able to do. If snakes are not able to stretch fully in their cage, I'd imagine spinal problems could result.
If you plan on putting a bunch of greenery, or large rocks, or branches in your cage, plan on the 55. I think that a 30-g would be cramped if it were adorned with much accessory.

I also plan on a change with my tank. I want something bigger once I move. So this is a two part question: 1) how should i go about moving my bp to a new place (about 500 miles away) 2) is putting him in a new home before I move better for him?

    Any good hidebox ideas?
If you'll be driving, a small plastic container with a hunter's hand warmer style heat pack underneath (and a couple of spares) should be adequate for transporting him as long as you have air conditioning and won't be leaving the snake in conditions of extreme heat or cold in the vehicle. If you'll be flying, it would be better to ship the snake overnight either with an airline carrier or an overnight shipper (NOT USPS -- you can go to jail for that).
