    Ambient temps are NOT surface temps. The temp of the air is what ambient temps are. With even poor ventilation the air will move so there is should not be an ambient gradient.

    Snakes have elongated organs (duh) most have one functional lung. It passes the liver and heart all blood vessels as well. The temp of the air passing in and out of the lung influence the temp of the blood and of course the core temp. Snakes need to keep reasonable core temps or the organs start to shut down. Below 75 it is unlikely that laying on a warm surface will overcome the cool blood. The digestion is the first to stop. This cool air also leads to burns as well the attempt to raise core temps by overheating the surface. Like trying to heat a cold rat with a hair drier. Think baked Alaska baked pastry over ice cream the surface is hot the core cold.
