In my opinion, bumblebees are ugly at the best of times. That one is no exception. I'd pass on that one, for sure.

Sorry- No advertising intended mods. I have nothing to benefit from that post. It was just meant to be a comparison of the quality of his proposed purchase vs. a few other better quality (IMHO) Bee's similarly priced.

Out of curiosity, what do you guys look for when picking out your bees? when buying a baby especially it can be tougher because they're all yellow. What do you look for in a baby to lessen the chance of one that well brown out. Also for the pattern, I want mine as clean as possible on the sides with high whites and I love when the black on the back is connected but kind of switchbacks along the back the while way down.

This is one of the best Bee's I have ever seen.....

This was my baby... not perfect, but decent at 70g. I give him a 7/10. He was an impulse buy that I regretted until recently.

Here he is now at 500g and not looking too much worse for the wear.... still only maybe a 7/10. There is a huge difference in how he looks with flash/low light/bright sun light. First is bright sun (see the heavy shadows). It makes him look more browned out than he is:

Low sun (light cast shadows) and you can see his white much better, and not so browned out. This is how he looks in everyday light except his head is a bit whiter:

Ok, now it worked. This is her at 1600 grams. I would look for a very clean bee.

I remembered you had a very nice one pictured on her before. That is awesome for her size/age!! She's like a 9+/10 at 1600g!!

Sadly only one crummy one. I'll dig it up when I get home.

What strikes me about these threads is that these "stunning" bees that people are linking to look to be hatchlings or no bigger than 150g or so. I'd like to compare them at the same size because a bee can brown out a lot in a short space of time, as MOST of them will do.

The one in the OP looks like a nice bee for the sub-adult size TBH

That last adult is stunning also but how old is it? Mine looked like that at 1300g and 2.5 years but after a clutch and an extra year and couple hundred grams has now browned out a bit more.
