Yes and no they are not super expensive I think only 60$ or so. I personally would feel safer if each rack had its own T-stat and failsafe. Having a T-stat fail (power surge for example) that is a lot of animals at the mercy of a single 100$ item.

How exactly do you set up a fail safe? I've never really thought of that before. All of our stats and incubators are plugged in to brand new grounded power bars with surge protectors. Also they apply power slowly during startup, like in the event of a power outage.

I am not 100% clear on the Herpstat Intros but I think they will shut themselves down if they reach the "high alarm?"

Is there anything else I should be doing?

The intros have both high temp shut down (all t-stats do) but the intro + has a low set point as well, soft heat (1% power a min not 100% from cold) They also have a mechanical relay that *should fail off* herpstats have the most sophisticated safety systems on the market. I trust them. But you have 16 animals relying on that single T-stat not failing. Flexwatt is cheap and works well but run wide open it gets wicked hot and actually dangerously hot. I personally would use at least two separate units (2 racks on one T-stat) and failsafes on each. If I never gave though to cash I would run one rack per T-stat and failsafe on each.

Failsafes are easy they are basically a on/off t-stat that the primary is plugged into if the primary fails the secondary detects the temp being too high and kills the power that turns off the primary.
