    The snake has to get close too the mouse or rat in order to eat it. I think this may have been done when the snake went for the mouse if the snake grabs the rat in the middle of the body it may bite trying to escape.

    Keep this in mind when feeding live. The survival of the mouse or rat depends on how hard it fights back, its a life and death struggle. What your job as a keeper is to eliminate this struggle thus eliminated the possibility of injury.
