Definitely don't miss the Shedd! If the weather ends up being nice then Millenium park can be fun to walk around, or Navy Pier if your family likes looking at knick knack/tourist trap shops, and there are a lot of little food shops there. You can find pretty much any kind of food you like, Giordano's is okay but usually it's the little non-chain places that are the best (or the worst, haha, its a bit of a gamble). The art institute is really neat to visit too. Pick an interest or activity and you can find it in Chicago, its pretty great (And take the L! haha, I grew up in the suburbs so for some reason I think the L is really fun to ride - most people think I'm crazy).
