^^this in reply to mike. As for it blowing over, we have thought of that too, but as I just walked around the house I notice several things missing only to find them in boxes in her moms bedroom. So who knows.
I've kinda stopped worrying at the moment and am focusing on my job. Just hoping the crazy weather we are supposed to get doesn't hinder me getting there. We already have a flood watch for my town till the 30th.

Alot allow caged pets. A 4 tub RBI sweaterbox rack is small and would be very unnoticeable. As long as they allow caged pets in the lease you dont have to tell them what you have. They have to give 24hrs notice before entering your apt. Throw a sheet over the rack. They legally cannot move the sheet to see whats under it so youre set. Snakes dont smell or make noise so theyre very easy to keep concealed. Obnoxious upstairs neighbors are probably not as annoying as parents fighting. Im not sure what facilities youre talking about? Ive never had an apartment so im not sure what youre referring to. If something was broke in my apartment then the landlord wouldnt get the rent check until it was fixed. There are alot of laws to protect tenants so i wouldnt have a problem doing this. Idk, like i said ive never had an apt, but it seems like itd be the better option given the situation.

I think she was referring to laundry on the complex or something similar. My gf refuses to live in an apartment for the fact that most don't let you paint or hang pictures because of nail holes. They charge extra fees for small animals (I have both a cat and dog that WILL come with us), and even though we are living alone its not like living alone. I've been to my share of apartments in which the walls were paper thin and I could hear whole conversations in the apartment right next to the one I was in. There are the night owls too whole make obnoxious noises and bang around at 2am. Sure I will be at work for the most part at 2am, but when I'm not and trying to sleep its just not going to work.
We will see what happens.

You would be surprised by how many apartment complexes prohibit owning exotics. A friend of mine hid her ball python and thought she'd be fine. But when the people came in to spray for bugs they noticed the enclosure. All those wires can get difficult to conceal. She was threatened with eviction. It happens. However, I personally ask about caged animals before I move in somewhere. But, where I currently live I was told pets (dogs included) were hunky dory by my property manager and the. Come to find out the association doesn't allow pets, but generally they are the most strict about dogs. Either way, I'm moving as soon as my lease ends because we chose our place with the intention of getting a dog. Misinformation can be one of the most annoying things about apartments. Finding an apartment that will allow you to keep your dog, depending on size and breed, can be difficult too. And expensive. There is almost always a pet deposit ranging from $350-450, and some places will charge you monthly pet rent on top of that - per pet! Many also limit the number of pets you're allowed to have to 2-3. That doesn't work for almost any ball python keeper I know. ;)
Also, withholding a rent check will do you absolutely no good if you have say...a main drain line clog and you can't use any water source in your house. That's kind of an "I need you here NOW" situation. So when they delay it's really obnoxious. (Personal experience on that one.) I woke up at 7am with every drain in my house backed up...couldn't use the sink even without water coming back into the toilet or bath...and the earliest they could do anything about it was 6pm! It was completely ridiculous!
As to the facilities, I'm talking about laundry, the gym, the pool, etc. It's annoying that you can't always use those things when you want to.
Given the choice though, at least in my current situation, I would still pick an apartment due to feasibility. I couldn't afford to fix anything major if it broke, so in that way renting is nice. They fix it for you and foot the bill. ;) But for the freedoms and ability to have the breed of dog I want...I still want a house at some point in the somewhat near future, expenses or not. I can't even get that English Bulldog puppy I wanted living in an apartment because they get over 50 lbs. *sigh* It's an outrage I tell you! :P

it is generally illegal to withhold a rent check, you really need to check into tenant rights in the state that you live in. In Ohio for example, you need to file an official complaint and if the problem is deemed legitimate and not rectified within 30 days you can pay the rent to the court and they will take out the necessary fees to fix the issue of complaint. I just want to let you know that not paying the rent until a problem is fixed can get one into serious legal problems fast.
I live in an apartment and own a home (in another state with a property manager) and my apartment is fine. I have lived in a few over the years and most have accepted pets and don't really care what you do as long as is doesn't pose a risk to other tenants (17' retic, in thier view) and are not directly violating the terms of the rental. I always have dogs so I don't even look at places that don't take pets. For me, some of the pros are that I don't have to shovel the sidewalk when it snows, rake the leaves, and when something goes wrong I can call the office and have it fixed. Given, not all maintainance crews are the same, but just try to be a smart consumer and know what you are looking for and check local media for info on the property manager.

Usually there are lawyers or groups who specialize in defending renters rights. Just, pitch your situation to them and they'll tell you're best course of action.

Having an apartment works for some people, but not in my situation as I said. Me and my gf like our privacy so apartments feel kinda claustrophobic. We have been looking at single wide mobile homes, but the only ones we have found in our budget are in super cramped trailer parks, which is just about as claustrophobic as having a neighbor on both sides or above you in an apartment.
Winter is coming fast and I'm not sure if we are just going to hold off till spring like we originally planned before we were offered her great grandpas house or not.
Either way at least we are making good paycheck and can actually afford things. Or first paycheck combined was close to $1,200 for 2 weeks.

Well, not to be misunderstanding, but if you are going to be picky about your living arrangements then you probably need to be sure you financial can be. If an apartment is your budget, then you'll probably just have to deal. It's not that bad, you barely notice more often than not. Don't count out duplexes either, we're in one for about $1000/month which is rent, natural gas, electricity, water/trash, and cable/Internet.
