    Re: Hog Island boa cross?
I am a relatively new snake enthusiast. I have two ball pythons, one very young, the other a little older and larger.

I rescued today a Hogg Island/Nic crossbreed. The previous owner gave him to me because she was concerned that he MAY have an RI. I am currently looking for a vet, but wanted to get more info on both the cross breed tempermant and how to handle the RI....

I realize that ANY snake can strike, just like any dog can bite! We do dog rescue as well, so I am very animal friendly. I have handled him a few times today and he really seems just fine!

^ Vet for the RI: RIs are serious and can be deadly if not treated so better safe than sorry. If it's confirmed the snake has an RI the vet should do a culture to prescribe the proper antibiotics.

Most boas are friendly and very inquisitive but it depends on the individual.

Yes your boas look like they are Hypomelanistic B.c.i. hard to say if they have any Hog in them as the Hypo gene would maks the Hog.

PS: Day your Hog is beautiful

I should also add that I am generally against crosses but doubly so with Hog Island because of their endangered status in the wild.

For the most part, I firmly believe in keeping things pure with boas. I don't necessarily mind too much if someone breeds crosses so long as they accurately and honestly represent the animals. However, I don't believe there is much of a market for crosses. The boa community is very particular and crosses are just usually frowned upon.

I do, however, strongly oppose crosses of threatened localities and sub-species. Hogs are threatened and so are Argentine boas, for example. It is best for the species to keep these animals as pure as possible to preserve them.

Additionally, most crosses, Hog crosses in particular, seem to just end up looking like ordinary Colombians. Hog crosses do not generally exhibit wild patterns or colors unless there are other genes at work as well. :gj:
