I'm just speaking from experience with the Caramel gene...I had every bit of $15,000 dollars and 6-7 years wrapped up in the project...Practically gave the animals away! It sucked losing the money, but they just aren't worth the hassle.

They definitely have fertility issues...The rumor is definitely hurting sales, so these people would be posting pics of Caramels on eggs...If they had them...

Here's a good example..Someone started a thread that Champagnes my not lay eggs...People couldn't post Champs on eggs fast enough...Why? Because they lay! LOL

Check out the same question on Caramels, which have been around twice as long as Champs...Almost no one post pics of one on eggs, just slugs...Like I said it's hurting the sales of Caramels...At this point someone would be taking pics and showing some proof, if it existed...Even if they are not much on participating in forums...Words out, so if people had them they would post them!

Sorry to hear about your bad luck :(. When the time comes then, I will make a new thread on her and I promise I will let you guys know either way if she lays eggs, if they are slugs, if they're fertile and if they hatch. I'll even include pics. The breeder seems to think that the issues could be from a specific line and also temps. I hope that I don't have those kinds of issues but I know it's a possibility. Right now though I'm going to give the breeder the benifit of the doubt and hope for the best.

I still have some hope for caramel females. I believe the reports that some breeders have had long strings of non-kinked caramels while others see high rates of kinking. My thinking is that if different breeders are having much different levels of expression with one caramel gene tendency there may be a common variable that can help with the expression of the tendency to lay bad eggs too.

That being said I wasn't comfortable selling the two caramel females I produced this year on the chance we'll one day know how to get them to lay good eggs so I gave them both away, but one was to my sister so I might get a chance to help experiment with how to get good eggs. I think I'll breed the caramel possible het hypo male I kept to a chocolate female because I really like the broad dark caramel combos like mojave caramel and of course hypo makes everything better, just wish I had a more sure line on that gene.

Maybe someone will figure how to work around both caramel issues soon and everyone who bought and held cheap caramel females will look like geniuses. I think unlike desert females where we now know they have actual deformed oviducts it might turn out that the problems with a caramel female could be fixed from one season to the next (example cooler, diet supplements, injections, something …).
