Vasuki, our older male ball python, was named for a Hindu god who takes the form of a snake. Neph, the Afrock, is short for Nephretiti, the African queen. Beatrice and Bene****, our ball python pair, were named for the reluctant lovers in Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing." Zephyr, the water python, was named for the way he feels when he's moving over your hands. Kali, the blood python, is named for the Hindu mother goddess and symbol of destruction (I think - Smulkin will correct me if I'm wrong.) Nizmo and Nevos, the durango mountain kingsnake and the striped California kingsnake, were named by our sons. I have no idea how they came up with the names.

Hehe - you ever read Fear and Loathing? IF not you MUST.
Pretty much - Kali-Ma is widely misunderstood and misrepresented thanks for the most part to a really awful Indiana Jones film (though the thuggis were real at one point) - in a nutshell
Quote:
Kali is the Dark Mother of the Hindu pantheon. She has what seem like contradictory aspects to most Western minds: she is protectress/avenger as well as beloved, gentle mother, she represents death and rebirth, she has bloody, violent aspects yet is called upon for mercy. Kali is the basic archetypal image of the birth-and-death Mother, simultaneously womb and tomb, giver of life and devourer of her children. Kali is found in the cremation ground amid dead bodies. She is standing in a challenging posture on the prostrate body of her husband Shiva. Kali cannot exist without him, and Shiva can't reveal himself without her. She is the manifestation of Shiva's power, energy.

Well, for current herp names, Snyder and Hanover were named for Snyder's of Hanover brand pretzels because they both make perfect pretzel shapes (I was going to name a future bp Mr. Salty, but my cousin beat me to it). Seymour is my roommate's, and she named him after herself (she made buddies with people on a fishing boat on her trip to Hawaii and when she volunteered to get more bait, they nicknamed her "Seymour the deck hand." Don't ask me.). Bo Peep most of you know was named for how I felt when he came home after being missing for two weeks. Sir Not Appearing in This Film got his name from the character who didn't appear in Monty Python's Holy Grail because he's really shy. And Waldo ("Where's Waldo?) and Scooby ("Scooby Dooby Doo, where are you?") got their names from how difficult they are to find. My next crestie will probably be Carmen Sandiego. :)

Marla, I love the etymologies of Snyder and Hanover! I never would have guessed.
-
Hehe indeed - now al you need is an UTZ :P
-
Smynx, thanks. If I'd already gotten a Mr. Salty, that probably would have given it away.
Smulkin, what is an UTZ?
-
smulkin, yes I have read Fear and Loathing. I love that book. I love all of hunter thompsons works, but The Rum Diaries is another one of my favs.
-
UTZ also makes pretzels and chips. Maybe they don't sell those down south.
-
i just name mine whatever the first thing i think of is.
-
Smynx, I've never heard of them, so I'm guessing that's the case. It's odd sometimes the food items we take for granted that can't be found elsewhere. People looked at me mighty strangely when I asked around about Little Debbies when I lived in Tacoma. :)
