    Can't they chew through it?

I have mice in a rack, tank, and tub set-up. No chew outs yet. If you give them things to chew on they should leave the tubs alone

I run my rats in racks with the mortar tubs or in 16 quart Sterilite tubs for my maternity rack. I have no idea on cages or how well they work or don't; never used them, cost and convenience being the two deciding factors there. The Bean Farm sells them as well if you're closer to the West Coast so as to save on shipping costs:

I decided to make my own out of the 30qt tubs, my next question is how would you go about making a hopper for the food?

Cut out a square or rectangle in the top screen. Cut out a sheet of hardware cloth and fold it into a box that will match the hole in the screen. And cover the bottom so food doesn't fall through. I use zip ties to keep it together, but metal ties are probably a good idea if you have chewers.

Thank you. The hopper is way better than a food bowl. The rats don't waste as much food. They soiled a lot of their food with urine when I used a bowl. And the food in my hopper can last 5-7 days, which is great.
