Re: Want to make custom cage stack but need advice
I made mine with fir 2x2 as the frame and cut 1/2 notches in the wood. It is lined with Xpvc and has 1in of insulation on top and 3 sides. I had glass cut for the sliding doors and the bottom. Hold heat and humidity like a dream :) I covered it with recycled wood from pallets and well I like them and the snakes seem to love them :)

Again I say, those are gorgeous, Rob! You make mine look cheap by comparison. :)

The cages posted in here make me wish I was somewhat handy and capable of building things.

:o they're all so beautiful. Is it really that easy to make cages? !

Sure is. :) Down to basics, it's a box. You add vents (I like using 2" PVC 'drains' from Lowes, they're perfect), lining for high humidity animals (My skink cage just has the latex base paint, but my BP cages have vinyl lining on top of that), and the doors you want (I use hinged doors of framed plexi because I don't have the tools to work with glass yet) and you have a cage. Basically. :D And it's a ton of fun to make them as well. :gj:

Aye I just called the local glass company and they cut to size and had the tracks for sliding glass doors. The hard part was venting I ended up using 1in siding vents because I didnt like the loog of the PVC vents as lowes :)

:) To each their own, my dear. I also can't afford better stuff...yet, which is another reason I use basic plywood and PVC vents. And glass is rather pricey. Also there's the fact that I can't drive, and glass panes + bus do NOT equal anything good. :D

Oh, just took these and thought I would share what those snake cages look like now. These are still version 1 (version 2 are in construction), but I got rid of those horrible spindly legs and built a nice new stand for them.
The sealed crack in the plexi of the bottom cage (which is home to the corn) resulted from the 1300 mile trip up from Denver in 09. Other than that, these cages are still just as good and solid as they were when I built them...umm...years ago. :)
