    You can get away with ambient of 75*. Thats what I keep my house at and all my snakes do fine as long as they have a good hot spot.

    To answer the OP's question, I believe there is no such thing as a uth "too big" as long as it is thermostaticly controled.

    I use 4 uth's , 24 watts each or 96 watts total,
    3 are thermostatic controled, the 4th is directly under the water dish (really huge water dish) no thermostat and runs 24/7 to help with humidity.
    my screen lid is 90% covered with aluminum foil held in place with aluminum foil tape.
    this allows just the right amount of ventlation to maintain the temps and humidity at the correct levels.
    I use no lights or ceramic heaters over head.
