    How do I know if I'm a 1337 h4x0r, if I don't know what 1337 is????
I'm beginning to dislike 1337, just because of all the mumbo jumbo!

Randy, I think it means "elite" but I've no idea how those particular numbers came to mean such a thing. I believe it's part of that whole youth-IM-cyber-speak phenom. Personally, I wouldn't want to be that young again for anything, so I'm glad to not be 1337!

It's mostly spoken by wanna be hackers and gamers. Either way you an typically tell whos a fake hacker or a lame gamer by who speaks like that. No offence Chris, but it is the truth. Most hackers generally don't do that, with exceptions.

It started out as hacker talk, and you were cool if you did it in your hacking clans. Then kids thought they too could be elite if they followed suit. Mostly gamers do it, but they too pretend to hack. It originated supposedly from a game.

look it up at urban dictionary.

It's ok, neither Chris nor I am actually 1337 either. We like GUIs too much. ;)

Having been involved in too many fourms, as well as the internet game we play, I'm actually getting proficient enough at 1337 that it scares me.

Basically, 1337 involved replacing letters with similar looking numbers or keyboard characters. Hence, 'E' is replaced by '3', the 'L' is replaced by the number '1', which looks remarkably like the lower case 'L' anyway. 'T' is replaced by '7'. In many cases, phonetic sound-alikes or similar sounds replace words, and letters are almost randomly capitalized. It's annoying as all get out when you're a writer who prefers proper spelling and punctuation, but it's not difficult to decipher once you get used to it.

Of course, once you get it, things like this get really funny...
