I can spell fine but when i text i usually use shorthand or 'text' talk as kitedemon said. On here sometimes i mix in a little of it too. Not bc i dont know how to spell, but bc i just dont feel like taking the time to make all my posts look perfect for you all lol.

For example in this post i didnt capitalize "i's", use apostrophes, and didnt spell out "because". Am i capable of doing all of that? Sure thing, i got a B in english last semester. I dont consider what i just did to really be that bad, but thats my opinion as a 19 y/o who grew up with all of this kinda 'text' talk.
Now when i see ads on craigslist that look like this, then even i get annoyed and can understand what you guys are saying lol:

"heyyy peeples lookin to tr@de my ps3 and 7 games 4 sum ball pythun morfs femalesonly pleez, thanks hav a g00d day evry1"

I disagree with this. I don't think it is due to laziness. I think it is due to a lack of intelligence. Now I understand typos and such but I'm talking about people using the completely wrong word in a sentence.

This girl on my Facebook was home schooled and graduated with honors. I will now show you what I am talking about. Out of respect I will not post names but I will give you some examples of her "laziness."

I'm thankful that the school systems here are better than where I grew up. My younger step daughter had the spelling word 'paleontologist' in first grade.

I, too, have a hard time writing in 'text' form. I can understand it, for the most part, but it takes me longer trying to figure out what I'm saying than to actually type the whole word out.

I can type fairly quickly. It comes from the fact I used to write my own novels in my spare time, so I developed a pretty quick hand when it comes to keyboards. Honestly, when people say it's too much work to hit the apostrophe button, I look down and notice that my pinky finger naturally hovers across that key anyway. More effort? Really? It literally takes me dropping my pinky finger to use most punctuation. So, no... 'Taking too much effort' is not an excuse. Hitting the shift key to make capital letters is also not an excuse. I look down and notice: Oh, my pinky finger is naturally hovering across that button too. If I hit that, it leaves my other fingers to select the proper key in need of being capitalized.

When we start making excuses, it's because we are just finding a way to get out of owning up to something. Yes, spelling mistakes happen. Grammar mistakes happen. I'm not super hard on people that slip up now and then, but there's a point when people start to use the excuses of: "It takes too much time"... "It's too hard"... "I don't feel it's needed all the time if I'm typing a quick message"...

By doing it more often, it gets easier. By doing it frequently, we get faster.

So why use the excuse that you can't, for whatever reason?

I timed myself typing this message. Just a few minutes. I stopped to correct a few things, but it didn't take long. It's just practice. The problem is, people are in too much of a hurry nowadays to practice, or feel a need to improve. "You can read it, so why should I correct it?" You don't have to correct it. But I'd rather if other people judged me based on the content of my words, not how the words are presented.

The only reason the "public schools" should be ashamed is that they allowed themselves to be forced into passing kids who should fail by their whining parents. "MY child shouldn't get a F and have to repeat the grade!" even when the kid can't do any of the work. Then the government wants to cut the spending... and the school administration cuts the budget where it affects the teaching, not where it's ridiculously inflated(in admin!).

I don't mind text speak, IN TEXTING. I understand trying to get a long message into the limited amount of characters. But in a forum, on Facebook, in a letter, or an email.. I find it inappropriate and in my opinion, it makes the person look like an idiot. When someone misspells 90% of the words, doesn't use enough grammar to be understandable or uses so many "shortcuts" that it's difficult to figure out what they're trying to say... they look like an idiot.

I will say that I do not whine about someone's grammar or spelling on Facebook. I just "unfriend" them, then I don't have to read the stupid posts that make my brain cells die. If they want to post like a illiterate mouth-breather... I can delete them and their similarly minded friendly can all congratulate themselves about how cool they are, while whining that they can't seem to land a job that doesn't include "Do you want fries with that?"

Note that I'm not saying that people who DO this are unintelligent. I'm saying they LOOK unintelligent. They look lazy and uneducated and sloppy. If I am looking to hire a person to do work for me, I would toss out every single application that wasn't filled out PROPERLY. I'm not a 'grammar nazi' but people can make an attempt.

It's amazing you can choose to be anything you want on the Internet, yet so many people choose to be dumb.

In my experiences with craigslist, most posts with horrible grammar are scams.

I learned a long time ago that if you appear to be sharp in both word and deed, people will perceive you to be sharp, no matter if you are, or are not. Conversely, if you appear to be be a window licking moron in word and deed, people will perceive you to be a helmet wearing idiot.
