I think the best points being made is the marker is a good tool for breeders, and possibly picking out of a group of possible hets. But don't go picking through a bucket full of "normals" looking for markers trying to get het pieds!

Chris, no offense but how many pieds and het pieds have you produced. How many possible hets have you raised? I have many pieds and hets that's started as possible hets with markers.

I have no experience either way with this subject. But it seems to me this debate has been going on for a while.

I don't understand why with so many breeders and access to sites such as this, why noone has suggested compiling a data base that could shed some better light on actual percentages.

It could be as simple as tracking any offspring that "have the markers" and that had been sired by a proven peid or het peid. You would need at least that as a control so that the possibility of het peid is confirmed. But I think you would not want to use clutches where 100% het for peid is a given. Then of those, follow how many prove out.

Then do the same with the offspring from known clutches that "do not have the marker." Track how many of those prove out still.

Compare the percentages and formulate a ratio. It might take a couple/few years but I am sure some breeders may have data already that can be compiled to start with.

I agree with Tfpets that this wouldn't do anything for looking at through a bucket of random snakes and saying this one has markers so it is het for pied. But it would settle the debate about the ones that should be.
